In July 2023, Seattle City Council was considering legislation that would enact rent control at an unknown future time if the state government ever chose to repeal a law that prevents local rent control in Washington. This is commonly described as a trigger law.
During the 2024 WA State legislative session, two rent control/stabilization bills were introduced (HB 2114 and SB 5961) that threatened to cap rents at 5% statewide, in addition to enacting many other arduous and burdensome requirements for housing providers. PAH’s strategic and calculated efforts ensured that both bills did not pass.
